Deloitte Southeast Asia and LEVEL3 have teamed up to create a three-part webinar series to discuss how the current COVID-19 crisis can be a catalyst to sustainability transformation.
As the COVID-19 situation evolves, businesses are starting to look to the horizon of recovery. But there is another crisis looming that threatens to strike harder and last longer: the crisis of climate change. While business leaders are focused on taking immediate short term actions to tackle the current COVID-19 situation, they should adopt a macro outlook and view this situation not as a crisis, but as a catalyst for change, to help them make decisive actions as the next crisis of climate change approaches.
Viewing climate change and sustainability more broadly as an opportunity rather than a threat empowers businesses to identify future opportunities, unlock new innovations and ignite unexpected collaborations. Just as companies rapidly transform their business strategies in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, they must radically transform themselves in order to thrive in this era where tackling the issue of sustainability is an urgent imperative.
By examining several forward-thinking organisations, we have identified three basic actions that they undertook to turn sustainability from a risk into an opportunity.
First, these companies look ahead to identify and understand future threats as well as opportunities.
Second, they look inside themselves to see how sustainability can spur innovation within their business.
Finally, they look around for opportunities to leverage their business ecosystem to share risks, while simultaneously creating competitive advantage.
In this three-part series, Sarah Kerrigan , Strategy Lead from Deloitte’s Centre for the Edge Asia Pacific will explore what each of these actions entail, and draw lessons from corporates, VCs and startups that are determined to catalyse their sustainability efforts amidst the current crisis.
